FOREGROUND

For foreground photographs you can often use the lowest f-stop for your lens, letting in the maximum amount of light. This will allow you to use a shorter shutter speed, although we’re still talking often a minute or more. But that’s pretty quick in the dark!

If you are focus stacking your images, you may want to consider using a higher f-stop number for a wider depth of field. This will require a longer shutter speed but fewer photographs to achieve optimum focus.

If you are introducing artificial light (i.e. light painting) or are in an area with a lot of ambient light, then you may be able to use a high f-stop (for example, f/5.6 or f/8), getting pretty much the entire scene in focus.
